Helping Your Daughter Understand Her Body: The Ultimate Girls' Body Book

As Bubs and Sweet Pea are knocking on the doorstep of adolescents, my husband and I have been talking more and more about having "the" talk with each of them.  Actually, not just one talk but several talks.  While this may be uncomfortable we want the information to come from us and not from their peers or media.   We also want the information to be factual and circled with a Christian worldview.

But where do we start?  How much it too much?

And this is why I was excited to see the book The Ultimate Girls' Body Book: Not-So-Silly Questions About Your Body by Drs. Walt Larimore and Amaryllis Sanchez Wohlever.

A book to guide a soon-to-happen conversation with my princess.

Thirty-five questions make up this book.  Questions covering topics from the changing body to beauty, from moods to sex.  Each question is answered by the doctors with additional information in boxes along the side.  Scripture verses are used throughout the answers and end each question.

There are a few points that I specifically like about this book.
  • The answers to these questions do not talk down to the girl.  Facts are provided that guide the girl to make their own decisions.
  • Dr. Wohlever shares her experiences pulling a medical book down to a personal level.
  • The book is divided allowing a parent to share as much or little at a time.  The questions grow more mature through the book.
Although this book is geared toward girls ages 9-12, I know that we are very shortly going to be covering these topics.  I am very thankful that I have a go-to book to guide me for when the time comes.

To close I want to share a paragraph from this book.
And remember this important truth.  You don't need to have a boyfriend to be someone's special girl.  You're already someone's special girl.  You are God's special girl.  You are your parents' special girl. And you are your future husband's special girl.
I just learned that there is a boys' version of this book too!  I haven't read it but if it is anything like the girls', I highly suggest!

Thank you to Zonderkidz for allowing me to review this book.
