Making Your Own Play Dough

There is just something about play dough that begs most children and adults to roll it over and over in their hands.  Beyond the educational value when making shapes, letters, and numbers, and imaginative play, play dough is excellent for fine motor skills.  Plus, it is super easy and inexpensive to make at home!  We like the texture of homemade play dough a lot better than the purchased option.  In our opinion, this is by far the best recipe.

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
1 tablespoon oil
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
food coloring

Mix all ingredients in a sauce pan.

Add food coloring.  If you desire red and not pink, you will need to add A LOT of food coloring.

Cook and stir over low/medium heat.

Soon the play dough will form a ball around the spoon and move away from the sides of the pan.  It will no longer be gooey and sticky.

Allow to cool slightly before storing in an air tight container or zip lock bag.

Make several colors for a great fine motor activities!
