Review: Adventures in Odyssey Cause and Effect

Cause & Effect (Adventures in Odyssey)

For over 15 years, I have been a huge fan of Adventures in Odyssey.  I refer to it several times on the blog and listen online as I type emails, blogs, and update the ABJCLM website.  I was so excited a few days ago when Bubs started listening to some past episodes during his quiet time.  He laid quietly and soaked it in.  He was learning spiritual truths and character education within the context of a modern storyline.

Cause & Effect is the latest release of Cd's from Adventures in Odyssey.  Containing four cd's, 12 stories feature the crew at Whit's End.

Momma C's Thoughts:
First things first - although some episodes are appropriate for early elementary age children, the target age is 9-12 year olds.  This set of CD's definitely fall under the "older" audience.
Secondly, I am really struggling with the new Whit and characters.  I realize change is sometimes unavoidable but for me (and other AIO fans that I have talked to) the changes are pretty drastic on this set.  I miss the down-to-earth stories.  I sometimes wonder if the writers for AIO are trying to keep up with the culture instead of sticking with the basics that they have done so well for many years.  The stories seem a little far out and reaching instead of deliberate and to the point.

Overall I feel like the average episode was a 3/5 rating.  I am giving the Cause & Effect set a 4 rating though because it is Adventures in Odyssey!  Highest quality and truly the best of the best.  Compared to so many other options, there is no comparison.  It's just that I believe that the producers can truly do better - because they have episode after episode.

If you are unfamiliar with AIO, here are some of the best sets, in my opinion.  I highly suggest them for elementary age children and older.  (The CD's have been on my Christmas wish list more than one!)

The Adventure Begins: The Early Classics (Focus on the Family, No. 1)
FUN-damentals: Puns, Parables and Perilous Predicaments (Adventures in Odyssey Gold)
The Lost Episodes (Adventures in Odyssey Gold)
